The Diffrences And Similarties Greenleaf’s Principles of Servant Leadership and Those Presented In the Biblical Passages

According to Greenleaf, there are a several qualities which dictate servant leadership. The same qualities are explained in the Bible in the book of Mathew 20:20-28.  To mention but a few, these qualities include: awareness, listening, empathy, persuasion, healing, commitment, stewardship, building and foresight and conceptualization (Frey, 2017). In comparison, the concept of servant leadership from a biblical perspective revolves around Christ’s teachings.  Some of the qualities that are linked to being a servant leader in the Bible include: dedication, love, care and humility. These qualities are similar to Christ’s teachings where he taught and instructed a person to love one another as oneself, which is also a major prerequisite for servant leaders (Whittington, 2017).Servant Leadership Sample Essay

There exist several similarities of servant leadership based on Greenleaf’s perspectives and those taught in the Bible. A major similarity is that they both consider servant leadership to come from the heart and one of the most effective ways of being great. Additionally, both Greenleaf and the Bible perceive servant leadership as transfer of power and authority to people and not having power concentrated on an individual (Frey, 2017). Therefore, in this context, a leader is simply considered to be a messenger or an agent of the people.

One of the major differences between servant leadership from Greenleaf’s perspective and the Biblical perspective is with reference to the conceptualization of what servant leadership entails. As mentioned by Whittington (2017),  in the Bible, Jesus demonstrated servant leadership in a logical and more peaceful way such as washing his disciples’ feet, feeding the hungry, healing the sick and teaching the crowds. In contrast, Greenleaf strongly considers that, servant leaders are generally supposed to be risk takers, an attribute that creates a huge difference between them and other people (Frey, 2017).
