Temper tantrums are often displayed in children whenever they suffer from any form of emotional distress (Abraham & Michie, 2008). The person handling the child might find it difficult to regain some physical control of the child. However, some strategies can be adopted to rectify the child’s behavior.

The main aim is to reduce the frequency at which the child is likely to through a temper tantrum. The child can be allowed to make some decisions about some of the activities that he or she is going to be participating in. She or he should work towards participating in daily activities without having emotional outbursts. For example, If you behave today you get to choose what we going to do today, 1. Mommy reads the book that you love, 2. we can play your favorite game for 30 minutes, or you get to ride your bike outside. Another way that I used to use with my older child was the chart, 10 stickers and we can go to the zoo or go fishing, Malik got to choose!. The children have to identify the achievements that they would like to make. They would also have to elaborate on the reasons as to why the changes are desired. In addition, parties whose help is essential will have to be pointed out (Abraham & Michie, 2008).

All the members of the family have to engage themselves in the steps that are going to be taken by the child towards meeting her set objectives. Members of the family should reward any good behavior that is displayed by the child (Conroy, Yang & Maher, 2014). Those interacting with the child should find ways of combating their frustrations effectively. However, the child’s behavior will require constant monitoring. Hence, every individual that the child is related to will have a role to play in the process of achieving the set goals.

As a human Service Professional my initial assessment would be to obviously explore the issue further. What causes or triggers the child’s behavior. Once this is done, we can work on MAPS goals to try to focus and improve the child’s behavior. However, I want to create or tailor a plan that will not only be measurable but specific and personal to the child. I want any goals we set for the child to not only realistic in nature but attainable. I also would involve the mother as there might always be a possibility, she is the trigger or the cause of the problem. Both would need to work on attainable goals and measurables ones.

to begin, I would create a plan that would help the mother not only work on her temper but also work towards developing communication with her child.

Second, I would also create a plan that would help her realize when She’s about to go off and how to help her from doing so.

Third, I would revert back to the mother and have her understand when her daughter is going off by looking or understanding the things that sent her daughter into her mode.

  1. To reduce the number of tantrums, the child has a week to less than seven tantrums.
  2. To increase the child’s ability to use his words to express emotions. I would like to see an increase of at least five new words to communicate his needs or express emotion.
  3. To choose at least one or more alternative solutions to express emotions or control big feelings. The child can have help choosing an appropriate choice if needed.

The focus to meet these goals needs to be social and emotional development. We need to work with both the patient and the parent or legal guardian. We will work on social, emotional regulation, verbalizing needs or emotions, and positive reinforcement. I want to encourage the parent/guardian to praise the child for behaviors they want to see. An example is Tommy; I love that you used your words when upset; now, I know how to help you. I’m so proud of you! I also want to observe the child to develop an accurate care plan. There are verbal and nonverbal cues I would like to be aware of to help the parents understand what may be triggering the tantrums. I would ask myself; does he need help with transitioning from one thing to another, is Tommy under-stimulated or overstimulated, does he have good social skills, can he talk? Does the child have too much energy, are they tired, etc. Developing the answer to these questions will help me deliver developmentally appropriate care. The parents could implement a sticker chart, and the child could help make his own chart at home; this will help him become acquainted with the new chart and get excited to use it. We could implement the use of choice cards at home and school. We could try to reduce the tantrum behavior; however, the main focus needs to be social and emotional development, and it needs to be taught the way the child learns.
