In order for a child to thrive after they are born, they have to successfully achieve milestones that they meet based on their development. Just at two months old, a baby should show several types of growth development that depict their social and emotional stage, language and communication stage, cognitive, and physical development stage. To understand your child better, it is important to pay attention to growth clues such as smiling, eye contact, or sucking on their hands and fingers. These emotional responses mean your baby is thriving and knows they are safe with you, their guardian. Babies will gurgle or coo when they try to communicate, as well as acknowledging when a sound has been made and where it came from. Their eyes will follow people, and their attention spans will be very, very short. Babies will also begin to hold their own head up and create easy movements with their limbs. It is important for an infant to display these developments in order to thrive during their toddler and adolescent years. At age 5, a child begins to develop behaviors and “traits”, such as stubbornness, laziness, shyness, etc. These traits (whether good or bad) will most likely stick with them for the rest of their life.

A baby needs to be safe, and knows they are safe when a mother figure or guardian is present. Constant attention is needed in order for a child to grow up feeling loved, a severe lack of attention and affection will result in isolated behavior or feeling withdrawn later in their adolescence. From infancy to eighteen months of being alive, a child’s most important goals are feeding (of course) and while we grow attached and express love towards the bundle of joy, they start to develop a sense of trust. During the years of early childhood to adolescence, children are constantly asking themselves questions about the world, whether it be actual questions or for infants, their curiosity speaks for itself instead of words. Being curious, exploring, being social, and building character are crucial milestones for a child. It is our job to see it that way and to protect them from certain situations, as well as teach them the right’s and wrong’s of our world.

Positive youth development impacts every child in the world. Their environment, the people they see and interact with, the unexplained feelings and emotions they receive, the need for safety and belongingness. These factors all contribute to how a child will grow, how they will thrive, and how they will see themselves. In order to do our part and ensure a healthy and positive development for our youth, we have to provide them with positive feelings of love. If your child feels proud of a drawing they did or happy that they’ve made a friend, we have to reinforce that positive behavior and avoid criticism. This is important because a child will come to their mother or father when they want to show off something they are proud of or when they are looking for a supportive role model, not criticism or belittling.
