Just to name a few examples of Internet red flags: while web-based search engines do yield a lot of results, they may not always be the most reliable; while it’s easy and fast to send an email, it’s also easy to hit that ?send? button before you?
ve really thought through what you wrote.
As with last week’s assignment, this assignment has several components that encourage you to think about this week’s topics.
First, you will conduct a research exercise using two different search engines. Second, you will assess the emails you write and those you receive according to the standards of ?netiquette.? Third, you will think about how the Internet can tempt users to borrow material without crediting it and think about the consequences of doing so. And fourth, you will look into the mechanics of registering a copyright.

Details of the Assignment
Part 1: Search Engine Comparison (20 points)
Choose a topic related to your major and conduct a short research exercise. First use Google to search for information on
your topic. Once you?ve done that, use Google Scholar to find information on the same topic. Then, in a coherent paragraph or
two,
2
compare the results that each search engine yielded. Be sure to indicate what topic you researched and be specific about how
the results varied, considering things like audience (who would make use of each set of results?), purpose (why might a
person conduct the search in the first place, and would the purpose of the search determine which search engine one might
use?), and reliability (can you count on the information the search yielded being truthful and accurate?).
Part 2: Evaluating Emails (30 points)
Jump ahead in the textbook and read pp. 365-71, on email etiquette, and check out this website, which lists 101 email
etiquette tips: https://101emailetiquettetips.com/
Then, read over a wide selection of emails that you received and sent over the past week
or so, in both personal and professional contexts, and assess how well those emails follow the ?netiquette? outlined both in
the textbook and on the website. Write one paragraph analyzing the emails you’ve received and one paragraph analyzing those
you’ve sent.
Part 3: Plagiarism and the Internet (20 points)
In this weeks reading you learned how to recognize and avoid ethical abuses in the workplace. But ethical abuses can
happen? And do happen? In academic settings as well. With so much information readily available on the Internet, and with the
ease of copying and pasting text from one document into the next, sometimes students have trouble separating their words from
another author’s words when they write papers incorporating outside research. Read the brief description of academic
integrity on the following UTA website: https://www.uta.edu/conduct/academic-integrity/index.php
Given what the website and your textbook say about plagiarism, do you think that a person’s intent should make a difference
when determining whether that person has plagiarized or not? In other words, if a writer meant to acknowledge a source but
failed to do so properly and borrowed the material instead, representing another’s words as her own, should that person be
held responsible for plagiarism? At the University of Texas at Arlington, as at most universities, students can be held
responsible for plagiarism even if they did not intend to plagiarize. That said, there are different views on this issue.
Write a paragraph explaining and supporting yours in light of what you learned about plagiarism in this week’s readings and
on the UTA Academic Integrity website.
Part 4: Copyright
(20 points)
One way individuals can protect their intellectual property is to register a copyright with the U.S. Government. Visit the
U.S. Copyright Office at https://www.copyright.gov and
3
answer the questions that follow in one coherent paragraph.
? Why bother registering a copyright?
? How involved is the registration process?
? Is there anything that surprises you about the process?
? Are there works you’ve created that it might be wise to register?
? If not, do you foresee creating works in the future that might make registration worth it?
Citation and formatting:
(10 points)
You should create a new Word document for this assignment and include each part of the assignment in one document. When you
save the document, title it like so: YourLastName_Unit2Assignment.
